Q&A Air fryer pros & cons, un-sweet your coffee, uses for plain Greek yogurt and learning to love veggies

 We love getting your food and nutrition questions!  In episode 66, we answer four listener questions.

 

Q:  What are the pros and cons of air fryers?  I'm thinking about getting one.

A:  Pros include:

  • Foods can taste fried without using any oil, saving many calories

  • Less of a mess compared to deep frying!

  • Safer than deep frying (just ask Mindy)

Cons:

  • Not ideal for a small kitchen.  They are bulky and take up counter and/or cabinet space.

  • The average "fryer" basket in the air fryer will hold about two chicken breasts, eight chicken drumettes or three 4-ounce salmon filets.  The Philips brand air fryers, for instance, include a  2.2 quart model that will hold 1.8 pounds of food, while their 3.5 quart model states that it will hold 2.6 pounds of food and is suited for four people.

  • The larger the size, the higher the price, usually $100 or more.

 

Q:  I know i put way too much stuff in my coffee. How can I learn to like it less sweet tasting?

A:  Your taste buds can adjust overtime to prefer your coffee, or anything else sweet, less sweet.  The same goes for salt.  Start cutting back on the amount of sugar, sweeteners and creamer you add to coffee.  Every few days use less and over the course of three to four weeks your tastebuds will adjust to less sweet tasting coffee.  If you get coffee from a coffeehouse, ask for the barista to add less syrup to your brew (especially in lattes and macchiatos ).  Instead of using 3 to 4 pumps, they will use 1 to 2 pumps of syrup.  If you can't stomach it the first couple of times, add a little stevia or milk to your coffee.  This helps cut coffee's bitterness.

Q:  What are some ways to use plain Greek yogurt? When I taste it plain it’s so gross!

A:  Plain Greek yogurt tastes more like sour cream than the fruit-flavored yogurts most are accustomed to eating.  Plain Greek yogurt is high in protein and lower in carbohydrates than most fruit-flavored varieties.  The fat content and calories will vary from full-fat to fat-free yogurts.  The more fat,  the less sour-tasting plain yogurt will be.  Try using plain Greek yogurt as a sour cream substitute or mix fat-free plain Greek yogurt with ranch dip mix to make a high protein, lower calorie vegetable dip.  

 

Other uses include:

  • Adding to smoothies

  • Add creaminess to soups or sauces with less calories

  • Add to baked goods like cake or muffins for added moisture

  • Replacement for mayonnaise in recipes
