Food ruts happen, but it's possible to dig yourself out. In episode 110, we talk about remembering your health intentions, fun ways to revamp your food routine and our three favorite healthy foods of the moment (that might help you out of a rut!).
Here are some ways we like to get unstuck from a food rut.
Have a kids meal week. Think about meals that you loved when you were a kid and make them in a healthy way. For example, instead of frozen fish sticks and mac & cheese, make your own with whole wheat bread crumbs, crushed cornflakes or gluten free breadcrumbs. Bake them in the oven or air fryer. Make a healthier mac & cheese with the chickpea pasta and toss in some steamed broccoli.
Theme nights are perfect if you find yourself wondering what's for dinner and it’s already 6:00 PM. Designate certain nights with a theme. For example make Thursday night Italian night. Think of all the healthy options you can make Italian style. Spaghetti with whole wheat pasta or bean pasta, baked chicken Parmesan with garlic roasted broccoli or pizza on Flat Out wraps.
Go to a new grocery store. Just getting out of the routine of going to the same store can help open you up to new foods that you might not of noticed before.
Use a menu planner board. One day a week sit down and write out what will be for dinner each night that week. Try Emily's meal planner board and put it in a picture frame; you can use a dry erase marker over it to just erase and write on week after week.
Invest in a new cookbook or take a cooking class.
Talk to a friend or professional. If you prefer to have a partner in this, go to a dietitian or friend who is creative when it comes to food. It’s amazing what a positive conversation about healthy eating can do for your intentions and mood.
