Navigating restaurant menus for healthy options is a lot like deciphering labels at the grocery store and not every menu lists nutrition information like the one pictured here. Buzz words and "healthy" menus can make a meal look like the best option, but could just be marketing it that way. In this episode, we share a few of our favorite items when dining out or at the drive thru, plus key items to look for on menus.
What you eat is usually more important than where you eat. At most places, you'll find a healthy option, though some take more creativity. First, ask yourself if the meal has protein, carbs and fat, AND in that order. If the meal is largely protein, you're likely off to a good start. You can minimize added fats by asking food to be cooked without butter or oil, sauces and dressings on the side and no or minimal cheese added.
At drive-thrus, don't overlook the kids menus. You can get a portion controlled meal, that's actually was the adult portion decades ago!
