The Moms of Food in Session- Fitness and Diet Trends of the Decades


The K-squared episode! We brought in our moms, Karen and Kathy, to chat about fitness fads and diet trends they remember and can't believe existed. Plus their tips for raising and feeding a family and most memorable kitchen mishaps.

Fad diets began as early as 1820 when Lord Byron made a diet of water and apple cider vinegar popular to slim down. Then, in 1863 was the start of the low-carb diet. The worst fad diet Karen and Kathy recall are the cabbage soup diet and cookie diet.

In 1925 The Lucky Strike cigarette brand launches the “Reach for a Lucky instead of a sweet” campaign, capitalizing on nicotines appetite-suppressing action. Then in the 1930’s the grapefruit diet, aka The Hollywood Diet is born. It called for eating a grapefruit at every meal.

Both Karen and Kathy were busy moms of three kids, kept tidy homes and put meals on the table each night. Some of their tips for raising healthy families include:

  • Be consistent and sit at the dinner table for meals

  • Have healthy snacks ready to eat at home

  • Limit fast food

  • Wake up early to get organized and get a head start on the day

Back on the diet timeline, in the mid 1950’s urban legend has it that opera singer Maria Callas dropped 65 pounds on the Tapeworm diet, allegedly by swallowing a parasite-packed pill. Then in 1960 Weight Watchers is founded by Jean Nidetch, a self-described “overweight housewife obsessed with cookies. Then in 1970 The Sleeping Beauty Diet which involves sedation is rumored to have been tried by Elvis. In 1977 Slim-Fast becomes a diet staple having dieters have a shake for breakfast, lunch and then eat a sensible dinner. In 1982 a fitness craze hits and hits hard with Jane Fonda launching her first exercise video with her catch phrase of “no pain, no gain.”

Whether it was a healthy meal or not, we have all had our fair share of kitchen mishaps. Karen's biggest kitchen mishap was using tobacco sauce instead of regular taco sauce in taco meat (can you say spicy???). Kathy made bourbon and beef, but tripled the amount of bourbon because who doesn't like bourbon?? Needless to say, it didn't taste good.

Last, the moms of Food in Session share a life tip with our listeners. Kathy's tip is to be the best you can be at whatever it is you choose to do in life, whether that's your career, being a mom, both or anything in between. Karen shares that there's nothing ever so bad in the world that you could not work through. Things always work out in the end. Be positive, don't take yourself too seriously, know what's important to you and always laugh.
