The Keto Conversation with Andy Frisella and John Gorman


We are talking all things keto in episode 41. With the help of Andy Frisella and John Gorman in the studio, we cover everything from what is a ketone to keto-friendly foods to satisfy crunchy cravings.

Andy Frisella is the CEO of 1st Phorm and Supplement Superstores, host of The MFCEO Project Podcast, twice published author, featured in Forbes, Entrepreneur & Inc magazines, Secret Entourage Entrepreneur of the year and public speaker.

John Gorman is the owner of Team Gorman, PHAT Muscle Project apparel, Physique Summit Conference, and Anytime Fitness Springfield, MO, 1stPhorm Elite Trainer, twice published author, public speaker consultant and Host of the Training and Nutrition Truth Podcast.

The ketogenic diet was developed in the 1920's as a highly effective treatment for epilepsy, a disorder causing seizures. The use of the diet as a treatment diminished in the 1940's when new medications for epilepsy were discovered. Though it's not a new concept to use the ketogenic diet for other reasons, like weight management, the diet is gaining traction in the diet and fitness world.

A common question and concern with the ketogenic diet is, "Will I get the keto flu?" According to Gorman, it depends on the person. He does recommend if someone is transitioning into a ketogenic diet and begins to feel the "flu" coming on, it can help to do a high intensity exercise to help the body use up stored glycogen and aid in the transition of the body switching to burning fat for energy (a byproduct of fat breakdown is the energy source, ketones, hence the ketogenic diet). The keto flu tends to occur when the body is still using both sugar, or stored glycogen, and fats as a fuel source.

Simply put, how do you follow a ketogenic diet? Do not eat carbs. If you can do that long enough, the body will turn to fats for energy. Frisella suggests salads, mashed cauliflower, parmesan cheese taco shells (find the recipe on Emily's Instagram page), peanuts and Whisps for the crunchy or salty cravings on a keto diet. Experiment with new recipes to ensure success and consistency in this diet.
